Wolf Parade - The Grey Estates

. . (in post from . Download this at Amazon iTunes)

The guitar is a very popular instrument. It is a stringed instrument with frets and is used commonly for rhythms and melody lines simply by plucking or the strum of the strings. This is a very old instrument and is very common in modern music. Everybody seems to have their own personal preference for the guitar. Some like acoustic, others like electric, and even others like synthesized.

Listening to guitar music is really relaxing. However, for others, playing it is the best. Playing the guitar may seem difficult to many. For beginners in music, learning any instrument can seem like a very hard task to complete that takes hours. There are, however, lots of available resources out there that can show you how to play the guitar through tutorials and such. It is really pretty easy to do nowadays.

One of the easiest ways to start playing the guitar is to learn how to read guitar tabs. These are basically tabs of guitar strings with numbers telling you which fret to hold down on that string. A different fret makes a different pitch for the string. These tabs are really easy to read and not hard to learn at all.

As with everything, tabs do have their drawbacks. One of the main drawbacks is that you are not reading music in a musical theory sort of way. You're learning the guitar notes through numbers and frets instead of notes. The best way to learn the guitar is through the real staff music notation. This way you can transfer your knowledge of notes and music to any other western instrument.

Playing with tab music at first start, however, is the fastest way. All you need to do is read the tabs and you can start playing the guitar. It's the quick way to start playing music. However, you probably won't have any idea what you're playing other than the way it sounds.

Pierce Rainer has a free 5 day e-course that teaches you to learn how to play the guitar.

Here are some ideas to get your music out of a one key or chord progression rut. You don't need to be a composing genius like Beethoven or Wagner to make your song or track more interesting to change or modulate the key for a bridge / middle out / break down. It's simply a matter of following a few simple rules and knowing what chords work together.

The most common way to modulate (change) to a different key or tonal center is to move the song to its relative minor or major. For example if you have a song in the key of C Major, A Minor is the relative Minor due to both chords sharing the C and E notes.

If the song is in D Minor the relative major is F Major again because both chords share two notes. In this case F and A.

The rules to follow here are to go from a Major Key to its relative Minor Key go down 3 notes (e.g. C to A) and to go from a Minor Key to a Major Key go up 3 notes
(e.g. D to F). Simple!

Apart from using this technique to modulate a song or track to new key you can also use this as a simple form of Chord Substitution. This is a technique often used in jazz music where one chord is replaced with another. For example if you had a chord progression that was Dm F G Am you could use the rules of Relative Minors and Majors to change the chords to F Dm Em C.

The style of music you would like to play should be kept in mind when browsing for a beginner acoustic guitar. A nylon-stringed guitar is better for those wishing to play Latin, classical, and certain types of folk or pop music. A steel-stringed guitar works better for rock, country, and other types of pop or folk music. For beginning guitar musicians, it is suggested to play the various types before arriving at a final conclusion as to what sound you favor.

Because nylon is easier on the fingers, many teachers recommend going with a nylon-stringed beginner acoustic guitar. This Is not always the most effective recommendation, because not everyone wants to play the kind of music that a nylon-string guitar produces. Some would like to play like a rock star, or just don't care for the tone that comes from a nylon-stringed guitar.

If your goal is to learn to play steel-string music, you should absolutely begin by practicing on a steel string guitar. At the beginning, your fingers will certainly be sore, but with time you will develop protective calluses as all guitar players do. If, however, you want to learn classical music, don't be enticed or distracted by a steel string guitar.

Here are some pointers for you when looking for a classical nylon-string guitar. Classical guitars have the same relative dimensions. The defined features of classical guitars are their small bodies and wide fingerboards and most importantly, their classical sound. Despite equivalent physical features, each classical guitars still have their own feel and tone so test several to find the beginner acoustic guitar that best matches your preference. A six-string dreadnought is the most commonly bought beginner acoustic guitar. There are only minor size variations among dreadnoughts, and they offer the kind of tone that is popular with guitarists who are just starting out.

The wood your beginner acoustic guitar is made of makes a significant impact on the tone or the sound the instrument makes. You will quickly learn that most beginner acoustic guitars consist of a spruce top. Be sure your new guitar has a solid spruce top rather than a two-piece one. This will increase the durability and stability of your new guitar. Your choices of wood for the back and sides will likely include mahogany, rosewood and spruce. Mahogany wood produces a light tone. On the other hand, rosewood results in a heavier tone. Which you prefer defines your preferences.

Looking for a beginner acoustic guitar with comparatively low action is something else to think of when you are a new guitar player. The space between the string and the neck is called the action. An action that is too high it can be a distraction and a deterrent to learning.

While you are out buying a beginner acoustic guitar, you will want to pick up an adequate electronic tuner at the same time. You have not had adequate experience yet to develop the ear of an expert. If you can spend less time in tuning your new guitar, you'll have that much more time for practicing on it and actually playing.

The Gretsch Guitar has a long and wonderful history going back more than 100 years. The Gretsch story begins in 1883 when Friedrich Gretsch started up a small musical instrument shop in Brooklyn New York, where they made banjos, drums and tambourines. Unfortunately Frederich wouldn't get to see his company reach the peak of its success because he passed away only 12 years later at the young age of 39.

The company was taken over by his teenage son Fred who ended up building the company into one of America's top importers and manufacturers of musical instruments. So in 1916, a bigger facility was needed and Fred moved the operations to a huge ten-story building. While in this new building, the demand for guitars started to grow, so Gretsch started offering acoustic arch top guitars to target the Jazz musicians and acoustic flat tops for the Country musicians.

In 1935, a man by the name of Duke Kramer joined the Gretsch Company and remained a valued counsel up until his death at the age of 88. Charles "Duke" Kramer was known as "Mr. Guitar Man" and was a big reason why Gretsch guitars are where they are today. To show Duke how much he meant to the company, Gretsch named a guitar after him called "The Silver Duke" even though he couldn't play a note.

In 1942, Fred Gretsch Sr. retired and left his sons Fred Jr. and William, to run the company. Fred Jr. and William had been working in the company since 1927 so they were prepared for the promotion. Fred managed for a short while until he left to be a commander in the Navy and then William became president. Fred Jr. took over once again a few years later in 1948, when William passed away.

The 50's were great for Gretsch guitars mainly because of the popularity of Rock music. They were the first guitar company to introduce custom color finishes to their lineup and ended up being one of the top guitar makers in the decade. They even attracted popular guitar players to endorse their guitars such as Chet Atkins, Eddie Cochran and Duane Eddy.

Popularity and success continued for Gretsch in the early 60's when George Harrison, who was with The Beatles at the time, started using Gretsch guitars.

The end of the 60's on the other hand was not that great. Fred Gretsch Jr. decided to retire and sold the company to Baldwin Manufacturing. Baldwin didn't seem to understand Gretsch's position in the market and times were dreadful for the company for the rest of the 60's and 70's. Baldwin also moved the guitar production to Arkansas where the factory went through two terrible fires.

Baldwin decided to shut down production in the early 80's and eventually sold it back to the Gretsch family when Fred Gretsch III bought it in 1985. Fred then moved operations to Savannah, GA where he began the process of reviving the company.

Fred got Gretsch back on the right track when he released a series of vintage re-issues, new models and some classic Gretsch drums as well. These releases caused an immediate impact and Gretsch instruments were back in demand.

In 2002, a deal was made with Fender where Fender would take control of the manufacturing and distribution of Gretsch. This joining of forces enabled the Gretsch Company to continue to grow without sacrificing their ideals.

Being involved with Fender has made the popularity of the Gretsch guitar even bigger today. Some of the artists who endorse Gretsch guitars are Chet Atkins, Brian Setzer, Bo Diddley, Jimmie Vaughan, Malcolm Young and Stephen Stills.

Wolf Parade - Call It a Ritual

. . (in post from . Download this at Amazon iTunes)

There are plenty of good love songs out there, but what makes a love song truly great?

First of all, the song must not only avoid the Scylla and Charybdis of sentimentality and clich - not an easy task - but must go beneath the surface (the surface being where most popular music resides). Next, there must be conviction in the singer's performance, an expressive potency that moves us, maybe even sends chills down your spine. Finally, the arrangement must reinforce the spirit of the song.

With that being said, I offer this list of ten great love songs -- some well known and some not so well known -- in a spectrum of styles representing the many shades of love.

PASSION

Court and Spark (Joni Mitchell) -- "Love came to my door with a sleeping roll and a madman's soul." With that opening line, Mitchell about sums it up. The song is a simple strophic structure characteristic of folk music: four verses (no chorus), in the midst of which Mitchell sets a contrasting bridge. But listen to what she does melodically at the end of each verse. The first two conclude with an ascending glide that expresses the word "spark," but the melody descends at the end of the last verse, mirroring the words "fallen angels." A subtle but brilliant touch.

The Look of Love (music by Burt Bacharach, lyrics by Hal David; as recorded by Dionne Warwick) -- There is a wonderful contrast in this song between the laid back, intimate verses in minor and the exuberant shift into major at the start of the chorus with the words "I can hardly wait to hold you." The tasteful orchestration creates the ideal romantic mood, and the final, softly dissonant jazz chord with the unresolved fourth in the brass is especially evocative.

Unchained Melody (music by Alex North, lyrics by Hy Zaret; as recorded by The Righteous Brothers) -- One of the most recorded songs of the 20th century. The rocking lull of the 6/8 rhythm could almost be a lullaby were it not for the way the melody winds to its powerful climax. The words and structure are simple and straightforward, but the melody - especially as performed by The Righteous Brothers, with melismatic flourishes and delayed notes - authentically captures the longing behind the lyrics.

Eternity (Lizz Wright) -- Here again, we have a lullaby-like 6/8 rhythm. But this time the voice is richer, with the sultriness of a summer night. The way Wright hangs onto the last syllable of "eternity" is especially evocative. The chorus seems to grow organically out of the verse as one continuous gesture, which also helps evoke the idea of "eternity."

Drowndeep: Hula (written by Stuart Matthewman and Maxwell; recorded by Maxwell) -- What's intriguing about this song is how the layering of voices, the instrumentation and the choice of the words create a sensuous, seductive sound. Fleeting phrases like "liquid kiss" suggest romance while the overall meaning of the words remain vague and mysterious, not quite making sense. For instance, listen to the sensuous repetition of the phrases "ooh ah" and "in us," or the modulated pitch of the tabla drumming way back in the mix. The genius of this song is how it uses sound itself to capture the feeling that lovers experience.

Trust (MeShell Ndegeocello) -- Of all the songs that have attempted to represent erotic passion, this is the most musically satisfying example. The drum beat is quite minimal: a slow alternation of bass and snare on the beats. A piano, backed by strings, plays arpeggiated chords just after the beat, creating a sensuous pull in the rhythm. Ndegeocello talks/sings the explicit lyrics in the verses, and Caron Wheeler adds ecstatic, improvisatory flights of wordless melody in the choruses. After the second chorus, a rhythmically free guitar solo interweaves with Wheeler's wordless singing. As both rise to a climax, the music morphs into an ecstatic melody over indigenous African drumming.

HEARTACHE

Crazy (by Willie Nelson; as recorded by Patsy Cline) -- The memorable descending melodic sixth that opens this song, an isolated snippet of two notes that Cline connects with a glide, poignantly expresses the feeling of being crazy with love, the emotional highs and lows. Like the opening line of "Court and Spark," it sums up everything that needs to be said.

Bitter (MeShell Ndegeocello) -- Just guitar and voice: the essence of simplicity, the music stripped down to emotional nakedness. A cello takes up where the voice leaves off after one solitary verse. This is one of the most plaintive songs ever written. The opening line, "You push me away," starts at the low end of her register and descends even lower, perfectly capturing the feeling of dejectedness.

Goodbye (by Gordon Jenkins; as recorded by Lizz Wright) -- This jazz-tinged number is built around a descending chord progression in a minor key that follows a verse / bridge / verse structure. The song fleetingly moves into major during the bridge as the melody rises in pitch to the words "But that was long ago," as if the singer briefly remembers a happier time. That moment alone qualifies this as a great song.

I Can't Make You Love Me (Bonnie Raitt) -- The opening line, "Turn down the lights," make us think this is going to be a song about seduction, but Raitt fools our expectations, as this is a song about unrequited love. As with "Bitter," the descending melody underscores the feeling of dejectedness.

Lesson 07 Bass Scale Charts

After you learn chord charts it will be a lot easier for you to understand scale charts, however it is not essential that you know how to read a chord chart to learn to use scale charts. The main difference is that a scale chart has more notes per string and the notes on the chart are not played all at once like a chord.

Scales

The easiest scale to play would be the chromatic scale. Some consider the chromatic scale more of an exercise than a real scale but it is important to know because it contains all the possible notes of the guitar. The next scales you will learn are the major and minor scales. Both the major and minor scales have 8 notes in them before they start to repeat the pattern. Another great thing about scales on the guitar is that all the scale types have the same pattern. That means once you know one major scale you know all 12, or once you know one minor scale you know all 12.

Scale Charts

Scale charts are very similar looking to chord charts. At the top there is the name of the scale, such as A Major or B Minor. Below that there is the same grid as a chord chart. This grid represents the neck of the guitar. Vertical lines show the strings from left to right, E, A, D, G, B, e. The horizontal lines show the frets of the guitar with the top line being closest to the nut of the guitar. The black dots show what notes are in the scale. Like a chord chart the black dots show where to put your fingers. But since most people don't have 8 or 16 finger you have to play one note at a time starting with the root note or the note on the E string (far left line) on top of the other note of that string. This is the lowest tone of the scale.

The root note of the scale is the note that is used to name the scale. If the scale starts on an A note and follows the major scale pattern after that then it is the A major scale. The root note can also be used to show where the scale pattern repeats if more than one octave is being played. The root note on a scale chart is usually shown by an outlined circle or a circle with an R in the middle. Think of the root note as the starting note of the scale.

After you learn the major and minor scale patterns you can play any of the 12 scales of that scale type. Just take the major scale, say C major, and move each note up one fret, now you have the Db major scale. You can do this with all of the scale on the guitar, but be careful when you get to playing the open strings near the nut of the guitar, make sure you are playing the correct scale pattern because they can change when you start adding in open strings.

DJ Tips On Mixing - Where Can A Beginner Learn To Mix?

Its important when you start out to learn the skills as a DJ that you get as much help as
possible! Finding as many tips, tricks & methods as possible will help educate yourself as a
DJ. In this article we will talk about some of the DJ tips on mixing you need to understand
as a beginner DJ and find out where you can learn to mix.

So lets jump straight in on this... Where can a beginner learn to mix? Well there are a
number of places a beginner DJ can learn to mix. If your old enough to hit the clubs, you can
watch the DJ from a distance. This is always a good starting point as you get to see a DJ
perform in real time in front of an audience. So hitting the clubs and observing the DJ in
action is advised!

If you want to take the observation more seriously, you can get a job as a light jock in a
nightclub. Now granted the pay is pretty low, however a light jock is in the best position to
watch a DJ's success and failure at entertaining a dance floor. Getting a job as a light-jock
will also give you the opportunity to gain contacts with DJ's that visit the club. You may
also have the opportunity to practice Djing on the clubs sound system when the club is closed
during the off hours in the day time. This proves to be invaluable experience for your
learning curve.

You can also think about getting a job as a mobile DJ. You can join an agency and get work
through them. These companies are often eager to hire and train new and up and coming DJs.
Using this channel can be a wise move and if you choose to do this you will want to make sure
that the agency will invest in you and teach you how to mix!

Finally, I think one of the best ways to learn if you are completely on your own is to watch
short video instructions of someone that knows exactly what they are doing. A DJ that has
been in the game for a long time and knows the in's and out' of Mixing. Trying to read from a
book is never really much use as you need a good imagination to follow the text instructions.
With video you can watch and learn exactly what is being taught and its much easier to
follow.

Hey DJ...Are you interested in more DJ tips on mixing? Tired of searching the net for tutorials that give away limited info? Want to learn from a proven method that has helped hundreds if not thousands of beginner/intermediate DJs? Then please visit DJ Tips On Mixing, or visit http://www.musicinstrumentreview.info/djtipsonmixing.html

Ace Your Next Job Interview

Interviews are often the most dreaded part of the job search process, but they need not be. With a little preparation, interviews become effortless and you can secure the job you want. When you sit to write an exam, you studied in advance. It's the same with interviews, but fortunately, not nearly as taxing as preparing for an exam. The steps themselves are simple, and don't require much in terms of preparation.

First, anticipate the likely questions. Sit and think about what sort of questions you would ask, if you were conducting the interview. It's impossible to anticipate every question, but think of some big ones, and even if they don't get asked, they will be good preparation for other questions and provide you a base to answer from.

First impressions last. Sad but true. When it comes to an interview, you must take care to put forward the right image. This extends to personal hygeine, being clean shaven, having clean nails and so on. You want to convey an image of professionalism.

Our bodies communicate volumes of information. Trained interviewers can read your body language like a poker pro. While we can't hide the messages our body sends, we can control and shape those messages to improve the impression we give to the interviewer.

This is just a brief overview, check out more information at my site, on these topics and more. The steps are guaranteed to turn your interviews in your favour, impressing the interviewers and securing the job.

Russell Qually runs and administers Job Directory, an excellent resource site on finding and securing your ideal job.
